MAJOR giveaway alert: Spa day at Everything But Hair

Okay, so if you follow my Twitter machine, you might have seen a couple tweets about a blog-post-for-service kind of exchange. And I promise, I’m not gonna be one of those lameo bloggers who completely sells out and just schleps her posts for swag. I’ve always maintained that the only sponsored posts you’ll ever see here will feature products and companies that I really love and stand behind, and this post is no exception. So read on…especially if you wanna win free spa services because that is totes about to happen, yo.

Like I said, I got a freebie Shellac manicure from this incredible salon here in Columbus. It’s called Everything But Hair and, as the name implies, they do just about everything but haircuts and styles. If you were a client at Erika Taylor Urban Spa, the atmosphere might seem familiar; Erika closed up shop to open this little haven in German Village. (She worked at a number of top Columbus salons before starting her own gig—think Charles Penzone, Salon Lofts and Jacob Neal.)

11-14-13 entrance
The salon is located in a former residence-turned-spa. So the whole ambiance is very homey, which I love. You feel like you could just kick off your shoes and hang out! And, well...you can.

11-14-13 nail area
Fresh flowers, decadent products and massage chairs on the pedi station equal ultimate comfort.

And when she says they do everything but hair, she really means it. In addition to the standard manis, pedis, waxing, facials and massages you’d expect at a salon/spa, you can also get permanent makeup (including eyelash extensions—sign me up, please!), Reiki, and even a personal psychic consultation. I haven’t had my cards read yet, but I’m curious to try it out—supposedly the woman, Susan Rawlings, is phenomenal. The local upscale hotels recommend Erika’s former and current salon to guests, and as a result, some pretty big names have benefitted from her salons’ services. Who, you ask? Oh, no one special…only Britney Spears, Julia Roberts, America Ferrera and Margot Kidder, to name a few. (Most of her male clientele prefer not to be named, to save face—after all, who could take a famous rapper seriously if they found out he got pedicures?)

11-14-13 psychic area
The psychic consultation area is designed to feel both comfortable and luxe.

Anyway, enough name-dropping. Let’s get down to the serious stuff, like why you’d wanna go there. Um, how about cause it’s awesome? Leona did my mani and oh girl, it was pretty awesome. She sent me home with a little bottle of oil for my ravaged cuticles. What a sweetheart. I also got little hand/arm massage and a mini Reiki sesh from the very talented and charismatic Starr Dillon. So much love. Oh oh oh, and I almost forgot the best part. This is a booze-friendly salon, y’all. That’s right. Just sign up for an annual membership (or a one-day membership for just $3) and you can BYOB your choice of libation. Bring a six-pack or bottle of wine, or write your name on a bottle of your fave liquor and leave it there; membership comes with other perks, so it’s definitely something worth considering.

11-14-13 details
It's all about the details. Booze and gummy bears? Gorgeous chandeliers, stained glass and local art?
Yes, please.

So here’s where the post gets really fun for anyone in the Columbus area. (Sorry everyone else. Come visit?) Between now and December 31, you can get 10% off any service at Everything But Hair if you just mention Verbal Mélange, or say that Emma sent you. (Cue announcer voice.) But that’s not all!!

Erika also has oh-so-generously agreed to give away an amazing spa package to one lucky Verbal Mélange reader! It’s the “Everything Package,” which consists of a “Pampered” manicure and pedicure (that’s the whole shebang; see details here), plus a “Blissfully Beautiful” facial and brow shaping. That is a $228 value, you guys. I KNOW, RIGHT? Easily the biggest giveaway I’ve been lucky enough to share here. Again, this is technically open to anyone, but you have to use the package here in Columbus before February 28, 2014. And gents, don’t be deterred; you can gift the package to someone else! I know a lot of girlfriends and wives who would be pretty psyched to find a spa day gift certificate in their stockings.

Giveaway is open until midnight on November 24. Winner will be announced and contacted via email within 24 hours. And folks, I do check to see whether you actually did the things you said you did to enter. So please don’t cheat. I’ll kick your butt to the curb! So what are you waiting for? Get to entering below.

Celebrating Earth Month with Aveda

So if you've read this blog for any length of time, you might know about the love affair I have with the Aveda salon I go to here in town, Nurtur the Salon. Every year, Aveda salons celebrate Earth Month by having special events and raising money for various charities. In the Columbus area, the charity is the Central Ohio Sierra Club's Clean Water Campaign. And for Nurtur, the events are twofold.

First up is Beauty for the Earth, next Monday (the 22nd) from 11 am to 9 pm at both the Upper Arlington and Grandview Nurtur salons. At the Upper Arlington salon, you can get a haircut, facial or makeup application for $20. At the Grandview salon, you can get a haircut, color gloss or shampoo style for $20. All proceeds--you read that right, 100 percent of your $20, not to mention any additional donations--will benefit the Central Ohio Sierra Club Clean Water Campaign. Both salons will also have a bake sale, raffle baskets, an art silent auction, a giving tree and a prize wheel (You can read more about the giving tree and other cool things here.) Just make sure you call and schedule an appointment if you want a $20 service; spots fill up fast! (Addresses and phone numbers for both locations are available on the website, linked in the paragraph above.)

The second big event is the annual Earth Jam fashion show/fundraiser. It's a week from today (the 23rd), from 6:30 to 10 pm at the LC Pavilion in the Arena District. (You might remember my post and photos from last year. If you didn't catch it then, click over for a second. Go on. I'll wait.

You back? Ok. OMG HOW SWEET DOES THAT LOOK? Pretty sweet, I know. That hair! That makeup! Those clothes! I can say that, based on last year's show, this year's is not something you want to miss. It was a blast. This year, the beneficiary of the event's fundraising portions is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio and its Camp Oty’Okwa in Hocking Hills, which focuses on educating children about the environment. So not only will you be entering raffles and bidding in live and silent auctions for the chance to win some truly incredible prizes, but the money you spend will benefit a truly awesome cause. On top of the auctions and fashion show, Earth Jam also will feature mini spa services (score!), door prizes (double score!) and an in-house DJ. Plus, I'll be there, so we can meet up! (Not that meeting me is nearly as sweet as the rest of that, but you know, I'm a little bit cool.)

You can buy tickets to (and find out some more info about) Earth Jam here. Or you can enter to win two tickets below!

(Giveaway runs from now until Friday, April 19, at midnight. I will contact you within 12 hours of the giveaway ending to arrange for a time to give you the tickets. Giveaway is open to anyone, but the show is here in Columbus, so please don't enter if you're not actually going to be in town on Tuesday :) Thanks!)

UPDATE! I got free stuff for hosting this. Namely, two tickets to Earth Jam and a free service at Nurtur. Sorry, guys. I'm not trying to be sneaky, I promise.

Local review: Nurtur Salon

When I moved to Columbus, one of the first things I looked for was a new stylist. Having just graduated from college in a town with approximately three salons to its name, I was overwhelmed with the options this city had to offer. Luckily, my friend Allory recommended a salon she'd been frequenting for years. Now, I'm a die-hard fan of Nurtur, an Aveda salon in the Columbus-adjacent suburb of Upper Arlington. So when their marketing person contacted me to do a review of their newest location, in the trendy little neighborhood of Grandview, I was thrilled.

(Bear with me on this review. It's long, but only because I love this place. And at the end, there's a giveaway!)

Nurtur is an Aveda salon, so it has great product and exceptional customer service. The Grandview location (1325 Grandview Ave.) doesn't disappoint there. When I walked in, I was promptly greeted by the smiling faces of the staff, who checked me in and offered me something to drink.

This location features a unique drink menu, with Staufs coffee and two blends of Staufs tea that were specially made for the store. The original location has coffee and tea, but they're not from Staufs, which is a locally owned coffee house here in Columbus that has what is, hands down, the best coffee I've ever had. So. Good.

Anyway, my stylist John was waiting for me once I got my drink. John's been doing my hair for about six or seven months now, since my original stylist left the company. He's fantastic; he knows my hair better than I do and is always able to tweak my style a little bit to keep it fresh. Plus, he's a great conversationalist, which in my opinion is almost as important in a stylist as actual talent.

All hair appointments start off with a quick stress-relieving chair massage. This is a major selling point for me; I have constant knots in my shoulders. I know what you're thinking, and yes, it's totally included in the cost of your cut/color. So yeah, that's pretty awesome.

After the chair massage, it's off to the super-comfy hair washing station. I know what you're thinking...comfy hair washing? At a salon? It sounds like a contradiction, but I promise it's not. The chair and sink are both adjustable, so you can really settle in for the shampoo-and-condition routine, complete with scalp massage. But it doesn't stop there. While the conditioner is soaking in, you get your choice between a mini facial or a hand and arm massage. I've had both, and I highly recommend the mini facial. It's basically pure heaven.

Then it's off the chair for the actual cut. I was really impressed with the clean, uncluttered design of the styling station. Most salons just have a mishmash pile of product and brushes and tools jumbled on the counter. Here, everything's grouped together off to the side, so all I saw in front of me in the chair was the mirror and a nice, clean counter.

Of course, the cut itself was phenom, as always. Like I said, John really knows my hair better than I do, and he always seems to know exactly what I want, without even having to ask. He knows his stuff.

In addition to hair cut and color, the Grandview location also does texture treatments (like relaxing), makeup application, brow waxing and hair spa treatments. And if you live here in Columbus (or plan to visit soon), you can win a $25 gift card for any of the aforementioned services! Enter below...giveaway's open until Tuesday the 11th, so jump on it :)

Giveaway: Jada's Jewels!

I'm super excited to announce an awesome giveaway! I'm collaborating with Jada's Jewels to give away a $25 gift card for their site. It might not sound like much, but I promise you, on this site $25 will go a long way! They're based here in Columbus, which is awesome, so I got to meet up with Marketing Intern Allison. That was cool because as a blogger, you rarely get to real-world interact with people you work with. It was also cool because she brought a present! It was the jewelry and earring set I'm wearing here:

9-18-12a

9-18-12b

9-18-12c
shirt: Old Navy
cropped pants: The Limited
shoes, belt: Target
necklace, earrings: Jada's Jewels Update: This should say "c/o Jada's Jewels...my bad, guys!

I freaking love the jewelry. It looks really heavy, but it's not. Score. And there's new stuff on the website every day...and there's something new I want just about every day, too, haha! Good thing it's all affordable :)

Ok, so I'm using Rafflecopter for the first time on this giveaway. That means no commenting! I mean, you can comment if you want, but it won't count as an entry. Hopefully this will be easier for everyone :) There are two mandatory entries, 11 extra entries, and an additional option that's worth TWO entries, that you can do every single day of the giveaway. So really, you can enter up to 29 times. Bam.

A short one

8-30-12a

8-30-12b
shirt: The Limited
skirt, belt: Modcloth
flats: Target

A short post, that is, as I don't have much to say today and I only had two photos I liked from this shoot. Usually, I take five to nine photos of each outfit. Any more and I start to get bored. (Yes, I have the attention span of a five-year-old.) So sometimes, in those few I'm-not-bored-yet shots, I have like seven good photos to choose from. Sometimes, I can't even find three that I like.

Anyway, tomorrow I'm having lunch with a marketing rep from an online jewelry store startup that's based here in Columbus. The concept is a little like Groupon or Google deals, only substitute all the discounted food/haircuts/whatever with jewelry. CUTE jewelry. I'm really excited to be collaborating with this company...and I mean really excited, not oh-I-got-free-stuff-I'm-gonna-pretend-to-be-enthusiastic excited. I can't wait to introduce you guys to the site, and with any luck, do a little jewelry giveaway!

Huh. Look at that. Guess I did have something to talk about today :)

To everyone else...I am considering hosting another PrintRunner giveaway next month, for stickers instead of business cards. But turnout was disappointing for this giveaway, so I'm on the fence. So I'm asking you...If I hosted a PrintRunner giveaway for stickers (design of your choosing), would you enter? Thanks :)

Do the Shamrock Shake!

You guys. It's back. It's finally back!!! The Shamrock Shake has returned to McDonald's!!

Okay, so maybe I'm a little too excited about this. But I'm kind of obsessed with this seasonal treat. It's sooo delicious, and I think the limited availability just makes it that much more special. So when I was contacted about doing a giveaway for this tasty treat, I was more than a little excited.

This year, McDonald's is partnering up with Skreened to sell some sweet vintage-style T-shirts celebrating the best shake ever created. Proceeds from the sales of these shirts (as well as 25 cents from each Shamrock Shake sold here in Central Ohio) will benefit the Ronald McDonald House charity. And you can win one of the unisex fitted T-shirts!

Mandatory steps to enter:
1. Follow @McDonaldsCMH_OH on Twitter.
2. Tweet this message: "Do the Shamrock Shake! Check out McDonald's vintage Shamrock Shake T-shirts: http://bit.ly/AlftPa"
3. Leave a comment saying you did the above. Make sure to INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL so I can contact you if you win!!

Extra entries (leave a separate comment for each):

Ashley P! Congrats girl. Check your email momentarily, we'll get you in touch with Raych so you can get your gorgeous new necklace!

(And if anyone's wondering why the random.org number only goes up to 20, even though the post says there were 37 comments...well, there were a lot of deleted comments, and a number of people who were ineligible because they entered after the giveaway closed on Friday.)

If you didn't win, check back here tomorrow (yep, tomorrow) for ANOTHER giveaway. Man, March is shaping up to be all about the goodies, no?

To enter:
1. This giveaway is open to Verbal Mélange followers only. So make sure you follow via Bloglovin, RSS feed or Google Friend Connect.
2. Leave a comment on this post, telling me how you follow (see above), and your email. I cannot contact the winner if you don't leave me your email. So yeah. That's pretty important.

Giveaway: The Limited gift card

Yesterday, I mentioned that I was going to my first blogger event. It was the grand opening of the new The Limited store over at Easton. A bunch of Columbus style bloggers were invited, and I thought was a great effort on The Limited's part to reach out to us. I got a $50 gift card for attending, and I got another $50 gift card to give away to you guys! How cool is that? But first, I'm going to make you look at all my pictures of the store. Muah ha ha.

10TV's Angela Pace.

The Limited CEO Linda Heasley. Got a chance to speak with her later, it was pretty cool!

Nichole Dunn, president of the Women's Fund. The Limited is partnering with the Women's Fund and even donating a portion of all sales this weekend!

Cutting the ribbon!

Free food! Yes, please :)

Clearly, gold is in again.

An open dressing room concept for parties and events. They have regular hard-door dressing rooms too.

This store wins the award for coolest dressing rooms. They have these buttons you can use to call an associate for a different size or just an opinion. Below that is a button that lets you adjust the light in your fitting room so you can see how it would look during the day, at night or in the office. In the next few weeks, they're setting up an area with a camera that will let you take a photo and email it to friends for their opinions. How cool is that?!

Got a chance to meet Heather of H&K Style Journey. Great blog, and she's such a sweetie :)

Thanks for scrolling through all that :) The event was fun, I only wish I could have stayed longer (darn work breaks). I wound up getting one of their Merino sweaters (in mustard yellow, hecks yeah!!!) and a pretty gold necklace. And you can get something too!

Moved in and a giveaway winner

Well, Matt and I are pretty much moved in to the new place! We still have some major cleaning and hole-filling at the old apartment, but we have three weeks to finish that and I think we'll take our time, haha.

The new house is coming along, slowly but surely. There are a few major changes that we'll need to make, like adding a cabinet and some counterspace in the kitchen, building a vanity in the bedroom, reworking my closet and adding lots and lots of shelving (this place has wayyy less storage space than our old one). But the good news is that our landlord is completely cool with us doing all this mini-remodels. He told us to make the place our own, so that's entirely what we intend to do! I'll get some photos up just as soon as the house stops looking like a tornado hit it. Which may be a while.

Did I mention we don't have Internet yet? (Or cable, for that matter.) Our installation appointment isn't until the 20th (!!!) so there will be a lot of coffee shops and sitting on the floor of our old apartment (thank God we didn't cancel the Internet yet) to do my blogging and freelance work. That being said, posts might get pretty infrequent until we have reliable service again, and returning comments might be even more sparse. Advance apologies for that.

But enough about my boring moving stuff. I have a giveaway winner to annonce! And it's...#9, JeNeal!

Congrats, JeNeal! I'll give your email to Ashley and she'll contact you about your print (or prints, if you choose).

Until next time, whenever that may be :)

So, I'm a little behind on announcing the winner to this giveaway. My apologies, guys, this weekend had me a bit frazzled/distracted. It's verbal{dot}melange{at}gmail.com.

If I don't hear from Brooke, I'll select another winner, again with random.org. Stay tuned!
